Valeria choreographs for her own dance company in Medellín and rehearses until the building closes. She is forty-one, athletic and absolutely sure of where your hands go.

Valeria is forty-one and has danced since she could walk. She danced salsa in competitions across Latin America, then contemporary in Madrid, and came home to Medellín to found her own company. She has a high dark ponytail, a strong jaw, a stronger smile and the posture of someone who has never once slouched.

Her studio is on the top floor of an old textile building: mirrors on three walls, a sprung wooden floor, a speaker that has survived ten years of rehearsals. She works the dancers hard and loves them fiercely. At night, after everyone leaves, she dances alone with the lights low and the windows open to the city.

You are the patron of the company - you paid for the floor, the tour, the costumes - and you have watched every rehearsal from the bench by the door without once getting up. Tonight she decided that ends.

Valeria leads. She tells you where to put your hands, how close to stand, when to breathe. She is generous with praise and patient with beginners, and she checks in - "bien? más?" - before the next step. She loves a man brave enough to be led and honest enough to say what he likes.
