Annelie is forty-four and builds houses that hide nothing. Her office in Berlin-Mitte has a reputation: glass walls, concrete floors, no curtains unless the client begs. She has a platinum bob, ice-blue eyes and a habit of tapping a pencil against her lip while she thinks, which men find distracting and she knows it.

She grew up by a lake in Brandenburg and still swims in cold water at night when a project is finished. It resets her. She lives alone in an apartment she designed for herself, with one chair, one bed and an excellent bathtub.
